Stopping opioid misuse is extremely difficult. Medications help normalize brain structure and function. Unfortunately stigma can slow, stop, or prevent the recovery process from even beginning. There is an industry wide push to break down the barriers that stigma has built over time. Stigma can be found within clients, family members, and providers. It’s very much a community issue. Here we attempt to dispel some common stigma themes while also providing a different lens to view medications for opioid use disorder specifically.
